Blackwell has emphasised: 'most of what the scouts and we are looking for in young players is technique. Sometimes it is the size of a player, while at other times it is his/her pace. But, overall we are interested to see:

- How they can manipulate the ball;
- If they are comfortable with the ball;
- Their ability to go past other players;
- If they look as though [if they are
particularly slim in build] they could get
bigger;
- Whether they are technically good [and that is
the first thing we look for], and so on.'

The Former Luton Town Manager adds: 'they (those on trial) have to be good! There is no doubt that they will have to stand head and shoulders above everyone else. There is no point in us saying they have demonstrated something that twelve other players on the field did. No! Such a situation does not give a player the advantage when we come to deciding which youngster to choose.'

'We are looking for the best. Therefore, if a youngster does not demonstrate any outstanding skill or technique that differentiates him/her from the pack, then we are left with no option but to continue the search elsewhere. Everyone has to understand that football is a business and only potentially great players will bring your team impressive results,' explained Blackwell.
